Eric LONGSWORTH (Electric cello / USA)
Chérif SOUMANO (Kora / Mali)
David MIRANDON (percussion / France)
The World Kora Trio is American cellist Eric Longsworth, kora player Cherif Soumano from Mali, and French percussionist David Mirandon. Their music is the encounter of cultures from three continents, “World music” in the truest sense. The colors of African music embodied by the kora resonate with the jazz and folk universe of the electric cello, and the varied percussions add spice and rhythmic vitality. The compositions are original, brought alive by constant improvisation and interaction, and the pleasure these three musicians have to be on stage together is palpable. Jazz, folk, rock, Maghreb flavours and blues come together with African tradition to create music without borders.
Based in France, the World Kora Trio has toured in Canada, Mexico and Europe, and has played notably in Mali, Moldavia, Corsica, and Poland. Their first CD, “Korazon” (2012), was received with widespread acclaim. “Un Poisson dans le desert” (2015), their second CD, confirms their status as an outstanding and original world music group, at once both eclectic and decidedly accessible.
Born in 1959, student of Gary Hoffman and Janos Starker at the University of Indiana, cellist Eric Longsworth immersed himself in jazz with David Baker, the renowned American teacher. Eric's classical training lead him to play professionally for four years in various orchestras in Houston, Texas, among them the Houston Symphony and Texas Chamber Orchestra. He continued jazz studies in Canada, participating in workshops with Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, John Abercombie and Steve Coleman...
Montreal became the launching pad for his career as a jazz cellist, where he collaborated with numerous artists, including bass player Marc Johnson, french accordionist Daniel Mille, Butch Morris, as well as playing solo concerts and writing music for films.
Living in France since 2002, Eric is an active participant on the french jazz scene, and has performed with Sylvain Luc, Eric Seva, Olivier Ker-Ourio, Claude Tchamitchian, and many others. Whether bowing, plucking or tapping his instru-ment's strings, he creates an unusual musical universe somewhere at the juncture of jazz and other musical idioms.
Malienkora player by tradition and heredity, Cherif played with Kabine Kou yate, Mamani Keita, Mare Sanogo, Yacouba Sissoko, Lansine Kouyate, Edsel Gomez, Ira Coleman, and Minino Garay within the framework of American diva Dee Dee Bridgewater’s project fusing malien music and jazz in 2008 (Red Earth/A Malien Journey). Chérif has also toured with jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca, bass player Marcus Miller, and Ivory Coast reggae artist Tiken Jah Fakoly (African).
In jazz, Cherif has found an expression for his openness to other musical cultures, and a wonderful outlet for his abilities as an improvise.
French drummer and percussionist, born in Tours in 1972, David was raised in Paris by a his father, amateur jazz saxophonist, and his mother, aficionado of folk music and African song.
Introduced as a child to Haitian ceremonial rhythms by master drummer Pierre Cheriza Fénélus, he beg an at age eleven training at the Academy of Paris and obtained at seventeen a “premier prix” in percussion. Professional musician already at eighteen, he has in twenty years of career accompanied on stage or in studio diverse artists such as Eric Lelann, Paco Sery, Richard Bona, Angélique Kidjo, Mahotella Queens, Wasis Diop, Lokua Kanza, Gérald Toto… He also toured extensively as a duo with Regis Gizavo.
David is especially appreciated for his ability to combine jazz drumming with african rhythms.
